But another movement is beginning to appear more clearly: African houses trying to take control of their own olfactory narratives in the international market.

Scent of Africa, a fine-fragrance house created in Ghana, presented the Akua’ba collection at the TFWA World Exhibition & Conference in Cannes. The collection is made up of six Eau de Parfums. Its international reveal took place in one of travel retail’s most strategic environments, bringing together distributors, airport operators and buyers from different parts of the world.

The official launch is scheduled for December 2026 in Accra, but Cannes served as a showcase for a bigger ambition: translating African cultural heritage into a contemporary language of luxury.

Six perfumes, six languages, six ideas

Akua’ba brings together Anidaso, Ifamora, Mayele, Soyayya, Upendo and Simunye. According to the presentation reported by Global Travel Retail Magazine, the names come from six African languages and represent stages or expressions of love: hope, attraction, intelligence, passion, devotion and unity.

That detail matters because it avoids treating “Africa” as a single, homogeneous identity.

The continent contains thousands of languages, peoples and cultural references. By using names from different linguistic traditions, the collection tries to show plurality rather than reduce its origin to a generic image.

The meaning of Akua’ba

The collection takes its name from the Akua’ba, a traditional figure in Ghana’s Akan culture.

In the tradition described by the brand, the story is linked to Akua, a woman who wanted a child and was instructed to carry and care for a wooden figure as if it were a baby.

Over time, the Akua’ba became one of Ghana’s most recognizable cultural symbols.

Turning this element into the axis of a luxury collection is a choice that carries responsibility. The brand needs to balance cultural respect, contemporary interpretation and international communication.

When it works, the result is very different from simply using “African inspiration” as decorative aesthetics.

Why present the collection in Cannes?

TFWA is not an event aimed primarily at final consumers. Its power lies in distribution.

Duty-free operators, buyers, airports and retail groups use the event to discover brands and negotiate expansion.

For a Ghanaian house seeking international growth, appearing in Cannes puts the brand directly in front of companies capable of taking it to other continents.

That is why travel retail can work as an accelerator for houses from countries that still have limited presence in Western perfumeries.

Airports as cultural showcases

Perfumery has found a unique environment in airports. Consumers are traveling, have time to explore and often look for products that represent places or experiences outside everyday life.

For a brand such as Scent of Africa, this context is particularly relevant.

Its Ghanaian origin stops being a barrier of unfamiliarity and can become an element of discovery.

A consumer who has never visited Accra may encounter the brand in Dubai, London, Paris or another international hub — and discover an African narrative through fragrance.

There is room for a new geography of perfumery

The rise of Arab fragrance houses proved that the international market can change rapidly when distribution, price, social media and identity align.

A few years ago, many Emirati brands were known only to specialized audiences outside the Middle East. Today, names originating in Dubai are present in dozens of markets and compete directly with European houses.

This creates an interesting precedent for other centers.

Ghana has a much smaller luxury industry than the Emirates, but present size does not necessarily determine future relevance. The first step is to build brands capable of translating their references convincingly for global audiences.

The risk of exoticism

There is, however, an important editorial and commercial challenge.

African brands can easily be framed by international media only as “exotic,” as if their relevance were limited to origin.

That would be a mistake.

To compete in fine fragrance, product, creation, packaging, distribution and consistency need to support the cultural narrative. Origin can open the conversation, but it does not replace perceived quality.

The true test for Akua’ba will be whether the collection can be discussed for its fragrances, not only for the fact that it comes from Ghana.

Luxury told from within

For decades, many African references entered perfumery through foreign houses. Raw materials, landscapes, symbols and names were reinterpreted by brands based in Paris, London or New York.

Scent of Africa is trying to reverse that path: build an international narrative from within the continent itself.

That difference is central.

When a local house decides which stories to tell, which symbols to use and how to present its aesthetics, it gains greater control over representation.

What to watch from December onward

The official launch in Accra will be the next important step.

After that, what will truly determine Akua’ba’s reach is the distribution secured through Cannes and other international partners.

Atlas Parfum will follow this movement because the globalization of perfumery should not be observed only through the brands that already dominate TikTok or Brazilian marketplaces.

The next relevant name may emerge from markets that currently receive little coverage.

Akua’ba is interesting precisely for that reason: more than six perfumes, it represents the possibility of contemporary African perfumery occupying the global market in its own voice.

The Akua’ba collection brings together six Eau de Parfums and takes Ghanaian cultural references to the international TFWA Cannes
