In perfumery, the idea is similar: several raw materials are organized to create a single olfactory impression perceived as a whole. That is why a perfume can feature a leather, amber, praline, tea, sea-salt or cake accord even when the sensation does not come from a single ingredient.

What is an olfactory accord?

An accord is a construction made from two or more aromatic materials that together create a new identity. The result may resemble something that exists in nature or create a completely imaginary sensation.

The goal is not necessarily to identify each component. When an accord works, the nose perceives the whole.

Notes and accords are not the same thing

A note is an olfactory reference used to describe a particular aspect of a perfume. An accord is a broader construction created from the combination of different materials.

For example, “vanilla” may appear as a note. A gourmand accord, however, can combine vanilla, caramel, lactonic effects, fruits, woods and other materials to create an edible, enveloping impression.

How does a perfumer build an accord?

The process is about balance. Each material has its own intensity, volatility, texture and behavior. Small changes in proportion can completely transform the result.

An amber accord can gain warmth from resins and vanilla, dryness from woods or brightness from floral and spicy elements. The final identity depends on the creative intention.

Classic and modern accords

Perfumery works with structures that have been recognized for decades, while continuously creating new combinations. Floral, citrus, woody, fougère, chypre, amber, aquatic, gourmand, fruity and leather accords are examples of directions that may appear in a composition.

New molecules and formulation techniques also make it possible to build more abstract effects such as minerality, cold air, clean fabric, soft smoke, metal, electricity or creamy surfaces.

Why do accords help explain a perfume?

A note list can be extensive. An accord shows the sensation created by that combination. Two fragrances may contain bergamot, rose, patchouli and musk, yet one may smell fresh and clean while the other feels dark and earthy.

The accord helps explain that difference.

Accords can also change during wear

Because components evaporate at different speeds, an accord can transform. A fruity effect may dominate the opening and then give way to woods and musk. In other perfumes, the main accord remains almost constant from beginning to end.

Learning accords improves your olfactory reading

Once you begin recognizing accords, it becomes easier to compare perfumes and identify preference patterns. Instead of thinking only “I like vanilla,” you may realize that you specifically like amber vanilla, woody vanilla or gourmand vanilla.

This language makes fragrance exploration more precise and is one of the foundations of Atlas Parfum.

Discover what accords are in perfumery and how different raw materials work together to create a recognizable olfactory impression.

Learn what an accord is in perfumery, how perfumers build it and why accords help explain a fragrance better than a note list alone.
An accord combines several materials into one olfactory impression.
